Think you need a kiln in order to fire and enamel fine silver metal clay? Think again! In this class, you'll learn how to use Lin Cora texture plates to create a fine silver piece born to be enameled! We'll add a bail and torch fire the metal clay.

After a burnishing spin, your piece will be ready to enamel. No long firing or tumbling times are required! We'll cover how to add enamel using a wet-packing technique, which colors are practically foolproof on silver, and how to torch fire the enamel using a butane microtorch.

You'll be able to watch the magic happen as the sandy grains of glass melt to become sparkling inlays in the silver. At the end of the class, we will cover finishing techniques for smoothing the enamel or removing errant grains to allow your silver to really shine.

  • Class Fee: $125 per participant. This fee includes 10 grams of Project X .999 silver clay, tools, and equipment you'll need to bring your creations to life.

Class Kit: $25, payable to the instructor at the time of the class. You'll receive a kit that includes a selection of coordinating pre-washed lead-free transparent enamels, enamel application tools, holding agent, wet-dry polishing papers, printed instructions, and the use of templates/textures, tumbler, and consumables.

Instructor:

Brandy Boyd, author of the Camp MC 106 Enameling Artisan Course and metal clay and metalsmithing instructor at BMB Designs.

Who Can Join:

This class welcomes participants of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced metal clay artists. Brandy will guide you through all clay forming and enameling steps.

Suggested tools to bring:

A small rotary tool can expedite the polishing and enamel cleanup but is not necessary. If you prefer to use one, please bring a face mask and safety glasses or a full face shield to use with the rotary tool. Any sanding/finishing of fired enamel will need to be done wet, so PPE is recommended to avoid the possible spray onto your face/eyes.

* Students will have access to tools and equipment in class. We are offering 10% off the tool kits for all students who register in advance! Select the option with the tool kit when you register. We will bring your tool kit to Tucson!

The tool kit contains 12 essential metal clay tools. To see the complete tool kit, click here.
